Mini Doc – Wings, Part II: A Pilot’s Story

Welcome to another Mini-Documentary. In this second part (of 3), we explore the creative inspiration, historical archives, and internal development team behind Cinemaware’s
ambitious project.

Building upon the success of their early hits, founder Robert Jacob and designer John Cutter set out to move beyond beautiful graphics to find true emotional substance. Rejecting the sterile mechanics of traditional flight simulators, they sought to create a true “life simulator” centered around the fragile humanity of early wartime pilots.

Studying the intimate firsthand diaries of World War I pilots and drawing creative inspiration from William A. Wellman’s 1927 silent masterpiece, Wings, the duo assembled a small, talented development team to push the boundaries of the Amiga’s architecture, blending a text-driven “Diary Engine” with the company’s very first foray into true “real-time” 3D.

The collaboration laid the groundwork for Cinemaware’s final masterpiece, just as the rise of the IBM PC threatened to change the commercial landscape forever.
