Death in the Caribbean

Welcome to another Quick Bits article. As I’m currently tied up in other projects, this one will be very brief with only a few pictures and a gameplay video. Hopefully, I’ll have more time to continue doing more extensive posts later this year.

Death in the Caribbean is a graphic text-parser-driven adventure game written in 1982 by Bob and Philip Hess and with graphics by artist Barbara Lawrence. It was published by Illinois-based MicroLab under its entertainment label, Micro Fun for the Apple II in 1983. Mike Retondo ported it to the Commodore 64 the following year.

The game came with a large beautiful map of the Caribbean island.

Travel through numerous locations on the Caribbean island, filled with puzzles and danger in the search of the lost pirate chest.
Like many of the earlier graphical text adventure games, Death in the Caribbean was extremely difficult to complete and everything had to be done as the authors intended, the smallest misstep would kill you instantly.

The Commodore 64 version was somewhat subpar to the original Apple II version with lower resolution graphics and tedious slow load times.

    1. Thanks, Yazid:) glad you enjoyed it… I can tell you that completing the game was pure torture, it took me days to complete and had to start over at least 20 times.

  1. Our family of 9 played this game individually shortly afer it came out. We’d sometimes play in groups. It was a ton of fun and believe it or not, we never finished. This was probably because we all created the map as best we could figure it out. (Dad hid and then lost the map, so we kids never knew there was one.)

We’d love to play it again at a family gathering. Is there a version we can pull up on a windows computer?

    1. Dave, thanks for sharing your story, love hearing memories like this.
You can play it using an Apple II emulator on Windows – https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/applewin.html
Its very easy to use and really don’t require any special knowledge.
The game itself can be found by googling “Death in the Caribbean Apple II rom”, these can be loaded in the AppleWin emulator, just like any other Apple II game.

Hope this helps you, otherwise, you’re more than welcome to ask:)
      Best
